Lymphedema

Lymphedema is swelling of protein-rich fluid that accumulates when the lymphatic system for fluid transport is not functioning properly or has been damaged. It can be hereditary (Primary Lymphedema) or it can occur after a surgical procedure, infection, radiation or other physical trauma (Secondary Lymphedema). If left untreated, the swelling can worsen, increases the risks for infections, and progression towards skin changes and potentially development of wounds.

Lymphedema Therapy

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is the "gold standard" of care for lymphedema. It consists of Compression, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Exercise, and Skin Care. Initially, treatment focus is the Reduction Phase until maximal reduction is achieved, then treatment transitions into the Maintenance Phase. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a type of "massage" to stimulate the lymphatic system to improve the absorption and transport of the lymph fluid. Compression may consist of bandaging or veclro compression wraps to reduce swelling (prior to being progressed to compression garments). Skin care includes moisturizing the tissue, keeping it clean, and prevention of infections and wounds. Exercise encourages muscle pumping, which facilitates absorption and transport of the lymphatic fluid. Frequency of appointments typically is 2 times a week for upper body lymphedema and 3 times a week for leg lymphedema for optimal swelling reduction. Frequency of appointments may vary depending on the severity of your lymphedema and your ability to provide self care.
